The Crucible Webquest
1. Judge John Hathorne was a Salem merchant and a politician. He was the judge of Salem witch trials and judged harshly. He is the grandfather of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of The Crucible.
2. It occurred in 1962 and lasted from June to September, 1962.
3. The Arbella Covenant says that we work for god and not for the devil. It was the basis of law that enabled the Puritan community to run their government.
4. The Hammer of The Witch symbolizes women power as being witches. It portrays women as witches.
5. Crucible is a vessel that its material could not be easily melted. It was used for material processing with high temperature chemical reactions. Also it meant a test or trial. In this book, “The Crucible” reference is to witch trials and killing of people accused of being witches.
6. It was used as kind of entertainment to a few. They tortured me and killed me. They wrongfully accused me of being a witch. They didn't want to hear what the truth I wanted to say. They only heard what they wanted to hear. This is what happened to people who were tried, they were given no chance to defend themselves and they were all killed.
7. An investigation carried out ostensibly to uncover subversive activities but actually used to harass and undermine those with differing views.
8. Puritans believed that witches were magical evils who will never attend church.
